24/7/2020 0 Comments A Little Salon Update!!Hi All
We are into our 4th week since re-opening and we want to say a huge thank you again to everyone for their kindness, patience and overwhelming support. We are almost through the initial waiting list and everyone still on it has been emailed so apologies if this is repetitive for anyone. So......we have a few pieces of great news. The Girls Are Coming Back!! We are thrilled that Stephanie and Michelle will be coming back to work in the first week of August. Stephanie is back August 5th and Michelle is back on the 6th. We will be giving them a couple of weeks to settle in, like we had to at the start. Go easy on them!! Online Bookings Are BACK!! We will be re-activating our online booking system this Friday, the 24th, from 10am. There have been a couple of changes, we have had to add an extra 15 minutes to most services to allow for our clean up times in between clients. If you are having any issues booking in multiple services because of this extra time just get in touch by text on 0833073399, by email on info@carolinesbeautyroom.com or through Facebook messenger, and we can sort it for you. To get your correct treatment time simply deduct 15 minutes per service, excluding add-ons. All links to the booking system on our website, Facebook and our salon app will become live on Friday morning after 10am. Please note that we are still restricting client time in the salon per visit so if a booking exceeds that time we will get in touch to re-schedule part of it for you. More Services and Additional Hours We will be re-introducing more of our services, including short facial treatments, spray tan and nail art. These will be available for online booking from Friday. Lash extensions will be available from approximately the middle of August once the girls have settled in but can be booked directly with us through text, email or Facebook Messenger until they become live on online booking. From the second week in August we will be adding some additional hours to our week as we will be able to run a shift pattern. Please note that we will have no more than 3 clients in the salon at a time. Individual staff will still be on reduced hours. We do have one small request of you. We completely understand that things are a bit crazy right now. People are getting called back to work, rosters are changing, there is next to no childcare to name just a few problems. But....we would really appreciate it if you could give us as much time as possible should you need to cancel. We have so much to do between clients that it is very hard to try and fill a space for that day, we have gotten as little as 2 hours notice for a cancellation. 8/6/2020 0 Comments Broad Spectrum SPF SunscreensThere's an ideal sunscreen for every occasion. Here's how to find yours! story highlights • During the day, skin fights off damage-causing pollution and UV light • At night, skin repairs daily damage and regenerates itself • Choose products that work with skin’s natural rhythms to achieve your healthiest skin sunscreen savvy Need UV protection? No problem! Use this easy-to-follow guide to find the right sunscreen for any occasion. by Dr. Claudia Aguirre For a star that’s been around for billions of years, the sun sure knows how to stay in the news. A recent headline claimed that sunshine can prevent cancer. This sort of news may seem paradoxical to our understanding of the sun as a carcinogen- but it is based on recent scientific findings that Vitamin D, made in the skin with the help of UV rays, may help prevent colon, breast, even skin cancer. So does this mean that you should ditch the sunscreen this summer?
The answer is a resounding no! The truth is most people do not apply the recommended amount of sunscreen, and even fewer reapply thereafter. Combined with the fact that sunscreens do not prevent 100% of UV rays, it’s safe to say that most people will inevitably get some rays directly on their skin. The key is balance- spending time in the great outdoors can be greatly beneficial and fun, but be smart about daylight defense. Use sun protection throughout the year to ensure your skin gets the proper protection while you worry about other things, like running, biking or playing outside. The Low-Down on D The Vitamin D Dilemma is no new topic. Health experts have praised its benefits for decades, even calling it the “sunshine vitamin.” But it is recent discoveries on the correlation between D deficiency and cancer risk that has made it a hot topic again. Thousands of people have been found to be deficient, but there are many reasons behind this. Skin color, geographic attributes, even exercise and age are all factors. The U.S. government is currently looking into updating the recommended daily amount before the end of summer. So what to do this summer? Don’t hibernate, get out there and enjoy it! There are sophisticated formulations that prevent UVA and UVB damage, while providing enhanced photoprotection with anti-oxidants and soothing and hydrating botanical extracts. Daylight Defense Thinking about sun protection doesn’t have to be confined to the odd beach trip. Anytime there is daylight, there are UV rays, even on cloudy days. UVA penetrates deep into the skin and is the major contributor to skin damage and wrinkles. Both UVA and UVB can contribute to the development of skin cancer – so it’s important to find broad-spectrum coverage for full protection. Most UV blockers do not prevent sun-induced free radical formation, leaving skin vulnerable to inflammation and premature aging. Antioxidants in sunscreen formulations may help absorb those free radicals, fighting potential damage that results in photoaging. Of course, vitamins themselves may be susceptible to breaking down with UV rays. Look for ingredient technology that addresses this issue. Encapsulated vitamins are one way around this - the vitamins are stabilized within a capsule until subjected to UV radiation, after which these antioxidant vitamins are released to work alongside the sunscreens and provide enhanced photo protection. Vitamin D can be acquired through many means. Recently I started buying mushrooms exposed to UV, making them a Vitamin D powerhouse. So remember, while Vitamin D is essential for health and immunity, don’t skimp on the sunscreen which has a proven track record of preventing skin cancer. A healthy diet, exercise, spending time outdoors and preventing sun damage will yield happy skin all year-round. Consider yourself D-briefed! 8/6/2020 0 Comments What is a Sunburn?story highlights • A sunburn is skin’s defensive response to severe UV damage • The best treatments are hydration and protection • A single sunburn may result in skin cancer years later We’ve all done it: paired too much time in the sun with too little sunscreen, ending the day with a red, sore sunburn. (Oops.) You’re probably well aware that a sunburn equals skin damage, but let’s take a closer look at what that means – and what you should do next.
What exactly is a sunburn? A sunburn is the skin’s response to ultraviolet (UV) exposure – and an indicator of severe damage. Just 10 minutes of intense UV exposure can set skin’s defense system in motion, ultimately causing any of the following signs:
Why is my skin peeling? Peeling after a sunburn is one of skin’s self-defense mechanisms: it’s your body’s way of getting rid of the damaged cells that are at risk of "losing control" and becoming cancerous. This mass death of cells results in whole layers of damaged skin peeling off, to be replaced by other cells underneath those layers. I have a sunburn. What do I do now? First of all, get out of the sun – and don’t risk further sun exposure until your skin has healed. Next steps:
Most importantly, give sunburned skin time to heal! For the next couple weeks, stay out of the sun whenever possible and cover sunburned areas with clothing or sunscreen if you must risk exposure. Plus, remember that skin is a great record keeper. Even if you can’t see the damage, UV exposure can cause skin cancer years down the road – so prevention truly is the best medicine! story highlights • Hydration and UV protection are the keys to maintaining healthy skin during the summer • Sun-damaged skin needs extra hydration and nutrients to help it get back to normal Between soaring temperatures and the sun’s rays, skin takes a beating during the summer. But it doesn’t have to: follow these easy guidelines to maintain hydrated, healthy, protected skin all summer long.
1. Exfoliate for smooth, clear skin Exfoliating removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and help improve the performance of your other skin care products. When: Perform in the mornings prior to toner, moisturizer, SPF and make-up application. (Pro tip: exfoliating helps your make-up last longer!) Don’t forget: After exfoliating, always apply moisturizer to seale in hydration – and of course, always shield freshly exfoliated skin with a Broad Spectrum SPF. Our top picks: Daily Microfoliant, Daily Superfoliant 2. Keep skin hydrated Hydration is more than just moisturizer! For optimal hydration, customize your regimen: • First, find the daily moisturizer that’s right for your skin condition. • Add a toner like Antioxidant HydraMist for an added boost of hydration. This is also great for travel! • Up your regimen’s level of hydration with an intensive masque once or twice a week. 3. Make friends with H2O Rising temperatures + time spent in the sun = dehydration, not just for your skin but for your entire body! Fortunately, the old adage holds true: eight glasses a day of plain, filtered water (more when you’re physically active) helps maintain hydration levels for your skin and body. 4. When in doubt, apply more sunscreen Most people don’t apply nearly enough sunscreen. Here are some guidelines to staying safe and protected: • Use a tablespoon of SPF for your face and neck. For body, apply enough to fill a shot glass. • Reapply every two hours when you’re out in the sun. • If possible, avoid direct sun from mid-morning to late afternoon, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Fortunately, today’s sophisticated sunscreen formulas let you choose sun protection that works with your skin condition! Our top picks: Prisma Protect SPF 30 or Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50. 5. Soothe over-exposed skin Forgot to reapply sunscreen? Don’t fret! The sun damage is already done, but soothing and hydrating sunburned skin can help prevent peeling and reduce redness. Hydrate irritated skin with a spritz of Multi-Active Toner (pro tip: keep it in the fridge for a cooling effect)! 6. Repair and treat sun damage What causes it: UV light causes photoaging in the form of brown spots, coarse skin and wrinkles – even when you don’t get a sunburn. Exposure to sunlight triggers a cascade of skin-damaging effects, resulting in inflammation, production of reactive oxygen molecules that affect healthy cell growth, and stimulation of collagen-destroying enzymes. What to do: First and foremost, opt for a fake tan rather than risking sun damage! Nourish skin with damage-fighting treatments like BioLumin-C Serum, MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque and Overnight Retinol Repair. story highlights • Not all sunscreens are equal. To find the best formula for you, pay attention to the labels. • Your body is exposed to UV radiation every day, whether you're indoors or out. Wearing a generous amount daily helps protect your skin from premature signs of aging, as well as skin cancer. Healthy, smooth, even-toned skin – and good health – are the trade-offs for golden tans and too much time in the sun. Surprisingly, many people who think they are protecting themselves are following outdated, inaccurate advice that is jeopardizing their long-term skin health. Let's go over some of the things you should know.
Not all sunscreens protect against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Many people think that applying any old SPF will keep us safe from both kinds of the sun's harmful rays. Unfortunately, this is not true. To understand why, look closely at the labels, ingredients and physical forms of the products you are buying. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how long it will take for UVB rays – the main cause of sunburn – to redden the skin. For example, SPF 15 means it will take 15 times longer for skin to redden with the product on than without it. This has nothing to do with UVA rays, which are the same rays emitted by tanning booths. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply, and play a major part in accelerating the signs of skin aging and generating skin cancer. To protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, don't just buy a product with an SPF of 15 or higher. Make sure it is labeled "Broad Spectrum," which means it contains a combination of ingredients known to protect skin against both types of UV rays. These could be chemical or physical sunscreens or a combination thereof. Chemical sunscreens (e.g., Avobenzone, Oxybenzone), work by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and physical sunscreens (e.g., Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide), reflect or scatter UV radiation. Chemical or physical sunscreen? It's a matter of preference. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and are usually more popular because they feel lighter and look less noticeable. They use active ingredients like Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Oxybenzone and Helioplex. Physical sunscreens, or mineral sunscreens, sit on the surface of the skin. They can feel heavier and look more noticeable, but they provide added coverage and are more resistant to sweating and swimming. Look for active ingredients like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide to identify them. A base tan does not protect you from the sun. There is no such thing as a safe tan. By definition, a suntan is your skin's defense to being harmed by UV exposure. Your cells respond to the affront by producing more melanin (pigment), and your skin darkens as a result. There is nothing healthy or preventive to be gained from trying to acquire a base tan. Sunscreen isn't just for the summer. Sun damage doesn’t just happen during the summer months or while at the beach. Photo damage or UV exposure (which causes aging) can occur from exposure to daylight through clouds, rain, glass and even fluorescent indoor lighting. This is why protecting the skin every day is imperative. Roughly 90 percent of photo aging is preventable by wearing SPF daily, so slather up! You're probably not using enough sunscreen. As a general rule, creams and lotions tend to deliver better protection than spray formulations, which most people don't apply enough of to get adequate coverage. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a "liberal use" of SPF 30 (picture a shot glass full of lotion) for the body, and reapplying every two hours (or after swimming or exercising). For the face, the rule of thumb is one teaspoon of sunscreen to deliver the SPF protection on the package. Our skin and our bodies are very sensitive to changes in stress levels, routine, exercise, eating habits and even a change in seasons. Sound familiar? Normally we only have to deal with one or two of these issues at a time, but lockdown has thrown them all at us at once. I don’t know about you, but I’m finding my skin is oily in areas, dehydrated in others and I’m getting painful breakouts as well. I felt it needed a bit of TLC and when I thought about it, I realised that a lot of you may be having similar issues, so I decided to share my mini facial with you. Naturally I used all Dermalogica products not only because they are what we use in the salon but because they are the first range I have used on my skin that actually does what it says and my skin has never been better. Even now, with my COVID breakout, it is not half as bad as it was in before I started using the products. Below is a breakdown of the steps to a mini facial and I will explain about the products I used and why. I didn’t use an SPF because I incorporated my evening routine into the facial, but I will go through the step with you anyway.
Steps: 1. Pre-cleanse It’s important to always double cleanse. The first cleanse will remove any excess oils and makeup from the skin to allow your cleanser to really get in and do it’s job during the second cleanse. I used Dermalogica’s Precleanse Balm but it is also available in an oil form. Precleanse is designed to remove stubborn oils, makeup and environmental pollutants from the skin and it also helps to lock in moisture. It is amazing at removing waterproof makeup and is safe to use around the eye area though don’t use too much, a little really does go a long way and you will be forced to clean the excess out of your eyes if you do. 2. Cleanse Many people overlook the importance of a cleanser. A good cleanser that is targeted towards your skins needs can greatly enhance the effect your skincare routine. My skin was in need of rebalancing and I had recently bought the new Dermalogica Active Clay Cleanser which was perfect for the job. Active Clay Cleanser is formulated to absorb excess oils while protecting the skins natural lipid barrier which means the skin won’t have that tight, dry feeling that is associated with some oil absorbing cleansers. It smells divine too! 3. Exfoliate Exfoliation removes old, dead skin cells from the surface of our skin, exposing a smooth, fresh layer underneath. I used Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafolient which is extremely popular as it combines both manual and chemical exfoliants with anti-aging ingredients. You will see immediate smoothing results with the manual exfoliant and the chemical exfoliant gives a longer lasting result. It will give your skin a fresher, smoother look. 4. Masque The masque stage is where you can effectively boost your treatment while really pampering yourself. It’s the one product that many of us will have numerous tubes of, each to address different skin concerns. Be sure whatever masque you choose is going to address whatever skin concern you need help with at the moment. For this facial I went with the Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque. It helps to clear breakouts while helping to prevent future ones and also has a lovely cooling effect on the skin. This is a ten minute masque allowing you enough time to relax and put your feet up with a quick cuppa. 5. Toner Toner is another often overlooked product that has been somewhat demonised in todays market. I often have clients tell me that they don’t use toner because it dries out their skin. This is a sign that the toner in question has far too much alcohol in it. A good toner is designed to enhance your skin, not worsen it, and should help prep your skin to enhance moisture absorption. I use Dermalogica’s Multi Active Toner. It’s light and refreshing and is packed with humectants which draw moisture to the skin. It is also in a handy spray bottle, like most of the Dermalogica toners and I even carry a travel size one in my handbag to give myself a refreshing spritz on a hot day. 6. Eye Cream Eye creams and eye serums are specially formulated to treat the delicate eye area. They are an important part of any skincare routine because the molecules in your face cream are too large to penetrate through the thinner, more delicate skin of the eye area and are incapable of addressing the issues associated with it. Today I used the new Biolumin-c eye serum which is fantastic for brightening dark circles and firming the eye area. An eye cream should always be applied using your ring finger, as it is the weakest finger on your hand, you will be less likely to add too much pressure to the area and drag at the delicate skin. 7. Serum Serums are my favourite part of my daily routine. They are designed to address specific skin concerns and are very effective. They are usually highly concentrated so you only need to use a little and you can often patchwork them and only use them on specific areas if needed. They must be sealed in under a moisturiser. My chosen serum is the Age Bright Clearing Serum. It was released within the last year because Dermalogica realised they had no product in their range that targeted both breakouts and ageing in one. It is very good at taking the inflammation out of a breakout and leaves your skin feeling soft and velvety. It pairs extremely well with Age Bright Spot Fader which can help reduce the appearance of new acne pigmentation and scarring. 8. Moisturiser As this was my evening skin routine, I used my night cream which is Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon. Our skins optimum recovery time is at night and this gel based cream helps to aid this, improving and brightening the skin tone. It also has encapsulated Lavender which helps you have a restful nights sleep and in turn boosts skins radiance. I often find it hard to get to sleep and this cream has literally changed my life! 9. SPF SPF is the single most important product you can use to combat skin aging. It should be an essential part of your morning routine whether the sun is shining or it is overcast and raining. The suns rays can penetrate and affect your skin even through the clouds causing pigmentation and fine lines. Many moisturisers have SPF in them but it is important to also top up your SPF throughout the day which is often forgotten. I use Prisma Protect SPF 30 in the morning, which is a moisturiser and SPF combo and I use Invisible Physical Defence SPF 30, which is solely an SPF, for topping up as I don’t like to waste my moisturiser for this. I really hope this and my video helps you to do a mini facial at home and give yourself a well deserved treat and some TLC. If you need any help in personalising your home facial or if you are in need of new products please don’t hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help. We do have some products available on our website and if we don’t have what you need we will give you a code to use on the Dermalogica website which will ensure you get a free gift. Please continue to stay safe as we can’t wait to see you all back in the salon when we return. This is a question we get asked all the time by clients. What exactly is the difference between acrylic and gel nails?
To be honest, once the products are applied they do not look very different but there are a number of traits for each system that make them different and a fully rounded professional nail technician should be able to provide you with the choice of both. Having a choice ensures that you end up with the correct product to suit your lifestyle – your work, your hobbies and how hard you are on nails. So let’s have a little run down of each system. Acrylic: Acrylic is the original nail enhancement product, discovered in a dental lab in the 1950s. The molecules present in the acrylic system are the basis for all our gel systems. They were originally known as porcelain nails. Acrylic is a liquid and powder mix that is self-curing. Curing is the hardening process and happens when the monomer molecules form long, cross-linked chains. Although your nails will feel hard by the time you leave the salon, the full curing process can take 24-48 hours depending on the system your nail tech uses. This is why they can feel a bit tight later in the day. Due to this slow curing process there are microscopic gaps in the acrylic that allow acetone or other enhancement removing products to penetrate the nail enhancement. This causes the bonds between the molecules to break down and the nails to revert to a jelly-like substance that can be removed easily. They are a harder product, giving them durability and this also makes them harder to file. You will also notice a strong odour with acrylic. This is a vapour caused by evaporation not fumes, as many incorrectly imply. Fumes are particles of gas suspended in the air and are caused by the likes of a car exhaust. The vapours from acrylic need to be kept ventilated so that they don’t build up, as this can cause headaches. There is a huge range of colours available and the options available with acrylic from a simple extension to encapsulation to 3D work is endless. The reason we ask what products you have on your nails if you’re coming to us for the first time is because each system is different chemically. The acrylic powder in each system is made from the monomer liquid so they are perfectly matched and will give the best results without weakening the nails or causing yellowing. Gel: Gel nails were developed in the 1970s and are basically a partially cured pot of molecules in short chains. They need a UV or LED light to cure, and they cure very quickly. This quick cure is the flash of heat that you feel when your gel is placed inside the lamp. It is the molecules giving off a huge amount of energy in only a few seconds, compared to the slow acrylic process. The thinner the gel is applied the less you will feel the burn, though some people are lucky to feel nothing. This is why you will see a nail technician apply gels in 2-3 layers. Gel cures compactly, with no room for acetone to penetrate so it must be filed off. There have been some soak-able gels developed but not all brands have them. It is a softer product, so it is more flexible. Gels have come on in leaps over the last number of years with greater ranges of colours and uses. Hybrid products like gel polish have taken the industry by storm and fantastic art products like moldable 3D gels, spider gels and foil gels are now the norm in salon work. In short, neither product is ‘better’ than the other or more ‘popular’, as some would have you believe. Most of the time it is down to the preference of the nail technician. Some clients nails are better suited to one or the other. That is why a complete nail technician can do both, in addition to offering manicures, nail art and gel polish and very often will also provide some of the newer services such as polygels and dip systems (but they are for another day’s discussion). They can offer every solution for you, to ensure you get the very best choice for your nails, that will fit in with your life. If you are thinking of having nails done for the first time, don’t be disheartened if they don’t seem to work, there is a solution out there for you, it’s just a matter of trying them out. And nail technicians differ too, make sure you choose someone whose work you have heard of for the right reasons. You have worked hard for your money, decided to treat yourself to these enhancements, make sure the technician is qualified, insured and has a good reputation. Meet our gorgeous Stephanie.
